The WTA Gets Austere In Austria

Despite being a tiny tournament (but perhaps compensating for its unfortunate name), the people at Bad Gastein sure does go all out with their players' party.

After having the players dress up in traditional mountain wear for last year's players party, the tournament organizers this year opted for some decidedly extravagant imperial formal wear.

It doesn't look like all the big names played along, but the ones who did have largely been rewarded by good results in their matches since.

It's amazing what willingness to put on lacy gloves for no clear reason will do for your tennis.

Here are some of the best shots from the night, courtesy of the tournament website.

Frenchwoman Alize Cornet, who has been playing well during this post-Wimbledon clay swing, sits daintily in a carriage of some sort.

Defending champion (and noted tweeter) Andrea Petkovic of Germany on the left, with Patricia Mayr of Austria on the right.

If you know anything about Mayr's personality, you know that it can't have been easy to get her to wear this.  But perhaps as good karma for playing along, she's having an excellent week in her native Austria, taking advantage of her wild card by making it to the quarterfinals.

Three tray holding players: (L-R) Yvonne Meusberger, Sandra Klemenschits, and Julia Goerges.  And on the far right, popular chair umpire Kader Nouni, aka "The Voice."  Pretty awesome that they let him join in on this ridiculousness.
