Shahar Pe'er Makes It Two in a Row in Uzbekistan
Shahar Pe'er won her second tournament in two weeks by capturing the title in Tashkent Sunday, defeating native Uzbek Akgul Amanmuradova 6-3, 6-4 in the final. On the back of her win in Guangzhou last week, Pe'er won one of the few remaining titles which comes with a costuming for the trophy ceremony. The dress-up is well earned, as this title marks ten straight matches in which Pe'er has not so much as dropped a set.
Amanmuradova had a hell of a week herself. She made the finals of her home country's largest event, beating top-seed Yaroslava Shvedova along the way. Few in the WTA Tour have a game quite as ugly as Akgul's, so for her to make it through to the final is a real triumph of will.
Lost in most discussions of this tournament are the unique conditions which Pe'er faces in this part of the world. Even though the Tashkent Open is nowhere near as large an event, it's pretty awesome that Pe'er was able to win a tournament in a Muslim country in the same year in which she was locked out of Dubai for being an Israeli.
