Roland Garros Day 9 Open Thread

Robby Ginepri, the only American male left in the French Open.

Because everyone expected Groth-Shvedova and Melzer-Gabashvili to be the match-ups we'd be seeing in the second week.

The complete order of play for today's fourth round action can be found here.

Ginepri’s the only American male left? Are we ignoring Junior Ore’s upset of #1 Daniel Berta?

Is this the whale section?

Sam Stosur upsets the lower seeded Justine Henin, ruining the Williams V. Henin quarterfinal a lot of people were looking forward too. However, Stosur playing some good tennis flying under the radar so far in this tournament. Serena defeated Stosur at the AO fairly easily 6-4, 6-2, but Stosur has been red hot on clay this year. Should be a good match.

I haven’t actually seen Almagro play in the tournament yet, but he’s still alive, and he’s winning right now over Verdasco. What’s going on there? I never expected this good a result from Almagro, who always seems too out of shape to play really well on clay.

And just like that Almagro’s into the quarters, which ties his best result, I believe. Of course, now he has to play Rafa. So I guess we’ll see how well he’s really playing.

wrong day, but wow to le Sod.

Doing what no only Nadal, Djokovic, & Safin could accomplish in 6 years. My man Fed’s down to quater-final streaks now (24 and counting!) What a run.

And a side note, Soderling in two tourneys has two of the biggest FO upsets evar. Go figure.

Question

I was reading somewhere that Roddick doesn’t do well on clay because his game is based on power, and the effects are reduced because the clay slows him down. Yet Nadal’s game is entirely based on power, yet does extremely well on clay.

Is this just because Nadal is used to clay more than Roddick, or Roddick can’t adapt his game?

Answer?
Yet Nadal’s game is entirely based on power, yet does extremely well on clay.

I’m gonna have to disagree with that. Nadal’s game , to me, is based on his movement and vicious spin which wears down players. Roddick’s always been more aggressive and quick strike, and clay is slower so it highlites his flawed movement and gives his opponents more time. Roddick generally hits flatter, and clay takes to spin very well.

IMO.
