Robin Soderling is the lone Swede in the French Open
If you are one that thinks American tennis is hurting, well it could be worse, you could be a fan of Swedish tennis. I had to double check the draw because I noticed that Robin Soderling is the only Swede in the Men's Singles Draw at the French Open.
The question to be asked is what has happened to Swedish tennis? The country that gave us Bjorn Borg, Mats Wilander, Stefan Edberg, Anders Jarryd, Jonas Bjorkman and countless, countless others has all but evaporated from the tennis map.
The fact is, tennis is still a popular sport to play and watch in Sweden, but the Swedish Tennis Federation has to be at fault for letting this happen.
Here in the States former stars like John and Patrick McEnroe have been pretty hands on with helping to develop American players and it is working to a point. Sweden needs the former Swedish greats, many of whom don't even live in Sweden anymore to identify and encourage tennis talent.
American loses top athletes to sports like baseball, football and basketball, Sweden has lost tons and tons of potential tennis players to soccer and ice hockey.
Here's to Sweden bouncing back soon in the tennis department, tennis needs them.

Soderling is representing well though, totally rolling through two rounds. Last year doesn’t look like such a fluke early on.

I agree, Soderling looks in great form so far. He really appears to want this title.
