Your New American #2 in the ATP...

I wonder if John Isner saw this coming at all.
I'm a little surprised that Tommy Haas is making this switch, since players rarely do it in this day and age. The only other player I can think of whose made a switch recently (besides the Kazakh purchases) is Liezel Huber, who, like Haas, had lived in the United States for a long time before making the move. Huber also switched the country she represented to give her a better chance at success in Fed Cup and the Olympics, since her native South Africa has no female tennis standouts to speak of at the moment, a dearth of partners which wasn't really an issue for Haas in Germany.
But there were signs this might happen. Haas recently became a US citizen, which few foreign tennis players do. Haas also wasn't on particularly good terms with the German Davis Cup team. I'd be surprised, though, if he jumped right in to Patrick McEnroe's squad, since I'm guessing (with not much proof) that in many ways this move was more of a de-Germanization than an Americanization.
In any event, a warm welcome to our new second-highest ranked American man in the ATP. Christoph Waltz winning that Oscar for Inglorious Basterds showed that Americans really can learn to love an angry German, and we'll do our best to treat Haas just the same.
