Australian Open Day 9 Open Thread

The only marquee that matters from here on. (Photo via Webshots)

We're getting down to the business end of this tournament, folks.  Hisense Arena is no longer needed for the rest of this tournament, and all the singles action is under one retractable roof.

Suspiciously few women's seeds left in the draw, eh?

Rod Laver Arena 11:00 Start Time

1. Justine Henin (BEL) v. Nadia Petrova (RUS)[19]
2. Zheng Jie (CHN) v. Maria Kirilenko (RUS)
3. Andy Roddick (USA)[7] v. Marin Cilic (CRO)[14]
19:30 Start Time
1. Andy Murray (GBR)[5] v. Rafael Nadal (ESP)[2]

One more scheduling note: It's a shame they put TDF interviewee Rennae Stubbs out on Show Court 2 for what could potentially be her last match at her home slam.  She deserves better.

All of these look to be competitive matches

My predictions

Henin Petrova- Ahh…. I have no idea. I’ll just say Henin in 3.
Jie Kirilenko – Ditto. I’ll say Jie in 3.

Roddick Cilic- Cilic in 4. I think Cilic will get enough of Roddick’s serve in play with his large frame.
Murray Nadal- The one we’ve been waiting for. I picked Murray to go the finals, so I’ll go Murray in 5. This could go deep into the night

My Predictions Didn't Publish for Some Reason...

So here they are:

Henin in 3
Kirilenko in 3
Cilic in 4
Murray in 3

Yeah, I just really haven’t been impressed with Nadal at all yet this tournament. I’d like him to make it tougher, but I doun’t see it.

Also, Nadal has a tendency to go down HARD when he does go down.

To me, his worst defeats are from heavy hitting offensive peoples like DelPo or le Sod or Djokvic, Tsonga, etc. Murray he plays well because Nadal can get in a rhythm and should be able to scrape out a TB. If Nadal isn’t healthy, that’s a different beast and probably would go down hard.

This second set siesta is exactly what Henin did against Wickmayer as well.

But Henin is doing nothing at this 5-4 return game at all.

5-5

This crowd is totally behind Henin. Short memories, I guess.

A win is a win, but that really wasn’t super impressive.

Kind of what I was thinking...

kind of an uninspired match.

This Kirilenko-Zheng match ain’t bad, but both of them would’ve been crushed by Petrova.

It’s completely pointless…and I’m sure no one cares. But Zheng having to fist pump after damn near every point is mildly irritating. And I’m not exactly Mr. Etiquette.

That’s the way things go in the WTA these days, sadly. It’s far from rare.

Admittedly, I don’t watch nearly enough tennis these days. Always have loved the sport but I tend to come and go with actually keeping up. I’ve never seen so much fist pumping. It’s bizarre. It’s like watching Tiger Woods win a tournament every 30 seconds.

Zheng is scrappy, but kind of annoying.

Yeah, she’s much more fun to watch against a big hitter. This has just not been good stuff.

I see in head-to-heads Zheng is 0-5 against Serena and Venus, and 0-2 against Lindsay Davenport. Big hitters just hit her off the court.
