US Open Day 10 Open Thread

The view of the grounds from Arthur Ashe Stadium, as the crowds file in for a night session.

Open thread really picked up during Nadal vs. Monfils, and wound up getting over 100 comments, which was awesome.  Here's hoping we match that and beyond today.  Here is the order of play for the singles matches on Arthur Ashe Stadium today:

Day Session: 12:30 PM Start Time

1. Yanina Wickmayer (BEL) v. Kateryna Bondarenko (UKR)

2. Novak Djokovic (SRB)[4] v. Fernando Verdasco (ESP)[10]

Night Session: Not Before 7:00 PM Start Time

1. Melanie Oudin USA v. Caroline Wozniacki (DEN)[9]

2. Roger Federer (SUI)[1] v.Robin Soderling (SWE)[12]

The full order of play for all courts can be found here, and live running scores can be found here.

There are some pretty intriguing doubles matches on the card today, including the Bryan Brothers taking on Dlouhy/Paes at 11 AM on Ashe in their semifinal, as well as the Williams Sisters in their quarterfinal vs. Yan and Zheng on Armstrong.

Doubles is much better live, IMO.

Tough way for the Bryans to go out, coming back from 6-2 in the third set tiebreak only to lose it 8-6, but Leander Paes deserved it—he was by far the dominant player on that court for almost the entire match.

Wickmayer comes back from down 1-4, gets five pretty quick games to beat K. Bondarenko 7-5, 6-4. Not a pretty match, by any stretch, but a pretty interesting one at times.

Hate to see Oudin crying at the end but I know everyone was thinking how much more she could do. She is 17 and probably went through some qualifiers or whatever you call them. I’m still surprised by how well she did.

by Camry on Sep 9, 2009 9:18 PM EDT reply actions

She had to fight through qualifiers at Wimbledon, yes, but she had direct entry into the US Open. Either way, the things she managed to accomplish at this tournament by making the quarterfinals (and doing so against an incredibly tough draw) should be nothing but a huge confidence boost for her in the long run.

I definitely agree her performance was an incredible surprise.

Great Run by Melanie Oudin.
