Around SBN: Will Rhymes 'Fine' After Being Hit By Pitch And Fainting

US Open Day 7 Women's Round of 16 Predictions

Will Kim Clijsters be saluting the crowd after her match today? Photo via d.yimg.com

From the Round of 16s on I'll have predictions up for each match.  Men are still on the third round, so just the women today.

Daniela Hantuchova SVK (22) vs. Serena Williams USA (2) -- Hantuchova has trouble with opponents that hit the ball extremely hard and opponents that get a lot of balls back, and Serena has been doing both of those things lately.  It wouldn't shock me to see Serena underestimate the player she has dominated so thoroughly of recent and perhaps have a scare in the second set, but I don't see a way the highest ranked player left in the draw loses this one.  Prediction: Serena Williams in two sets.

Kim Clijsters BEL vs. Venus Williams USA (3) -- Especially with the disaster the top quarter of the draw has become, its a shame these two former champions have to meet in the fourth round.  Clijsters has looked much sharper than Venus this week, especially as Venus has been relying on heavy knee taping to keep her gimpy left leg somewhat usable.  What Clijsters lacks, though, is recent match toughness on big stages like this one.  Clijsters is going to get a lot of balls back and keep Venus on the run, which is exactly what Venus doesn't want in an opponent when she's running on one flat tire.  Surprises me to be saying this, but... Prediction: Kim Clijsters in two sets.

Li Na CHN (18) vs. Francesca Schiavone ITA (26) -- I have absolutely no clue how this one is going to shake out.  Schiavone looked pretty incredible in beating Azarenka, and she is coming off a quarterfinal at the previous slam, Wimbledon.  But Li is probably the better player when both are at their peak, and Li looked good the one time I saw her earlier this tournament, during her dismantling of Larcher de Brito.  This could be a feisty one, but if Li can keep the ball inside the lines occasionally she should be able to get through.  Prediction: Li Na in three sets.

Vera Zvonareva RUS (7) vs. Flavia Pennetta ITA (10) -- The women's night match for Sunday could be a good one if Zvonareva plays her A-game.  There's no reason to think she will, though, as since her leg injury in April she hasn't been anywhere near her best stuff, stuff that took her to the Australian Open semis at the beginning of the year.  Pennetta, on the other hand, had a very solid summer, and is riding a wave of confidence on the back of reaching a career high ranking.  Should be back-to-back US Open quarterfinals for the queen of obscure clay court tournaments. Prediction: Flavia Pennetta in three sets.

Do you disagree with any of these? Who do you see coming through on Day 7?
