Great stuff here from Jesse Witten to get back on serve vs. Djokovic, who really seems to be underestimating Witten’s deceptive speed.

11 forehand errors for Federer already in the first 8 games.

And Hewitt breaks for 5-4, will serve for the set. Didn’t see this one being so interesting so early.

Federer loses the first, Witten serving for the first against Djokovic. The hell is going on here?

First man in the fourth round:

Radek Stepanek. He gets the winner of Djokovic-Witten.

Also, cheese.

"Soderling v. Querrey, which somehow got relegated to being third up on the Grandstand."

I think the US Open schedulers are committed to having a balance of men’s and women’s matches on the show courts, despite the popularity of the players in the available matches. Yesterday, I was on Court 11 watching Gael Monfils and it was absolutely packed, while Na Li vs. Kirilenko was on the Grandstand.

In all my years of going to tennis tournaments, I’ve yet to see evidence that the men’s and women’s games are equally of interest to live spectators. Maybe that’s true in the top 5, but in 5-20, it’s not even close. Heck, Stepanek’s first-rounder was quite crowded, as was Kohlschreiber’s.

Also, cheese.

Absolutely true. Tournaments like the French Open and Wimbledon make that more explicit with the scheduling, but the US Open is more into scheduling equality with court size, pragmatic or not.

5-5 was the worst game for Sharapova yet.

the way this is playing out

the draw is comically stacked.

It’s one thing to have Venus and Serena in the same half, but Clijsters and (especially) Pennetta are just brutalizing opponents and either would probably be the favorite in the top half as well.

Also, cheese.

I freaking love Andy Roddick.

Somehow he manages to be the underdog who comes through (or tries really hard and doesn’t) over and over again.

Indeed.

Quite a feat, making himself into the underdog vs. an American with Isner’s ranking.

This certainly is not a bad day for the future of American tennis now, eh?

Haha, god no.

Safina is down 4-6, 0-2 Kvitova right now. I don’t think anybody, Safina included, really has any interest in seeing her play more matches in this tournament. It’s been absurdly torturous.
