US Open Day 4 Open Thread
Some technical difficulties getting the thread up this morning (setting publish time as PM instead of AM, whoops), so here is your slightly tardy Open Thread for Thursday's second round action at the US Open.
There's still a lot of tennis to be played, so share your thoughts on what's yet to come or what's already come (Oudin d. Dementieva? Jesse Witten in the third round?)

Jankovic in trouble too here, down a set and 2-1 to Shvedova. All these players are clearing the path for Dinara Safina.

No one woul've predicted Jesse Witten in the third round. I thought he is a tight end for the Cowboys

Haha, never even made the Jason Witten connection before.

Jankovic down a break 4-2 now in the second to Shvedova. The hell?

How far do people think Melane Oudin can go in this tournament? Give her any shot in the next round vs. Sharapova?

If she can beat Dementieva, she defintiely can beat a <100% Sharapova. From now on, nothing she does short of beating Serena or Dinara for the title can completely surpise me.
This is now Kuznetsova’s quarter, but could make a run to that match because her next opponent would be Jie Zheng (although she would be no pushover). Provided she takes care of that quad strain, and plays like she did today, why not?
Jankovic blows several set points, going to a second set tiebreak vs. Shvedova.

Dementieva reminds of the Chicago Cubs. Great season, poor post preseason. Never wins the big one. Or am I over-simplifying?
Maybe slightly oversimplified, since she did win the Olympic gold last year. But yeah, in the slams she’s rarely lived up to expectations.

Oudin reminds me of what Michael Chang was on the Men's tour
Runs down everything, tough mentally, extraordinary effort.

Querrey Wins
But he’s hardly looked great this tournament.

And down goes Jankovic. I never thought she’d lose after having fought off so many chances.

WTF is going on? I expected good runs from Dementieva, Jankovic, and Stosur based on their play this summer. I’m starting to wonder if we aren’t in for more surprises and we end up with a real whacky woman’s QF.
Of course, it’s tough to believe Serena would choke, but Venus wasn’t stellar in her opening match and Safina… well, we’ve been down that road before.
Hockey blogging can't get any flatter.
I guess with Dementieva out, Max Afinogenov can decide if he’s going to the KHL or not. lol

Haha yeah, for sure.

This is the best thing that could have possibly happened to Safina. All her obstacles are dropping like flies. Not a single seed left to stop her from reaching the semis.

Wow, Lisicki goes down HARD as she loses match point to Rodionova. Looks like a torn ACL. She’s lying on the court crying as chair umpire Lynn Welch hovers over her.

Wow, Lisicki carted off the court in a wheelchair.

Sharapova has to be the favorite to get out of the top half, right?

I think that the opportunity is there for her, but Safina may start improving, and as I said earlier, Kuznetsova in that quarter.
I really think that Melanie could make a big run if she gets past Maria. But Maria looked really strong tonight against another 17-year old American.
I guess that half without Dementieva is entirely up in the air now.
