Oudin Takes Her Act to Asia

Saying it is furthest she has ever been away from home, Melanie Oudin, who turned the ripe ole age of 18 today boarded a plane this week for Japan.  Then China... then who knows.

Oudin finds herself now with some pressure.  Much will be expected of her after how showing at Flushing Meadows.  The draws will be tough, her ranking in the 40's will not get her seeded, but she will gain some more valuable experience as this year winds down.

Anything else she does this year in my opinion will be gravy.  The real test will take place as 2010 begins in Australia.  A good run "down under" will put her in good position for the rest of 2010, and he ranking could jet up even more.

Oudin had a busy couple weeks off after she lost to Wozniacki in the quarters.  She appeared on Ellen, Conan, threw out the first pitch at an Atlanta Braves game, was honored on the field at an Atlanta Falcons game, and signed a couple endorsement deals.  Big stuff for someone who just turned 18.

The Australian Open will be interesting

But the real pressure will come when she goes back to Wimbledon, where she started her magic and where she has her first real ranking points to defend. For Ben’s enjoyment, I’ll point out that before that, she lost to Zuzana Ondraskova in the qualifying of Roland Garros. Gotta be all gravy until Wimbledon.
