US Open Day 15 Open Thread: Men's Final

Looks like we've made it.  The final day of the 2009 US Open is finally upon us.  The final grand slam tennis this decade.

And with that momentous occasion comes an equally momentous open thread, into which you can and should share all your comments, reactions, and thoughts on the day's tennis.

Here is the singles order of play for Arthur Ashe Stadium on Day 15 of the US Open:

4:00 PM Start Time

1. Roger Federer (SUI)[1] v. Juan Martin del Potro (ARG)[6]

While I've stuck to just posting singles matches this tournament, there's a pretty interesting doubles match as well, today, as the women's doubles final pits Cara Black and Liezel Huber against Venus and Serena Williams in what will be Serena's first appearance since her controversial outburst at the end of her singles semifinal.  How will the crowd react to Serena? Will the Williams sisters appear distracted by the negative press? Will any line judge have the balls to call a foot fault?

That match starts at 1 PM. Feel free to throw thoughts on it in this thread, as well.

Australian Open 2010

Since this match is over, let’s look ahead to next year:
AO – Should be interesting. Nadal is defending champ but Fed will be # 1 and looking to reclaim the title.
RG – I’m looking forward to this one. Can Rafa take back what is his?
W – Murray chokes again before the final. Fed wins.
US – Roddick wins and then retires.

that is a man whose going to have a short career. He’s like a running back who takes every hit he can see with full force. He’s got a couple more slams in him, but his body takes such a gruesome beating every tournament he plays, I just don’t see him lasting more than a couple more years at or near the top of the game.

Carillo is better when she is the sole color person, not working sort of second to McEnroe. She tries to be too clever, and she doesn’t have time to make any worthwhile comparisons. I like her when its just her and one other, but as part of three she’s not at her best.

Soo my CBS channel isn’t playing the match…instead I get watch local news (pathetic, I know). Does anyone know if/when the match will be replayed? As hard as it is to watch a match i’ll already know the outcome, with the finals I would really like to see both the mens single finals, and the womens finals. Since it was during the day, I missed the Women’s final, and I would like to see some of the reactions to Serena to be honest, but as a fan I really like watch the Williams sister play together.

P.S. I think I’m being sabotaged, ESPN didn’t have the women’s doubles in the guide so when I Set the DVR I only got part of it, and now tennis channel says its playing the US OPen, but I tuned to it, and it is something else. ughh. I’m getting frustrated here!

Federer was mad about the amount of time Del Portro was allowed to challenge a call. Chair umpire told him to be quiet…Fed responded by saying something along the lines of “Don’t tell me to shut up, I don’t give a shit.”

one of the more interesting articles I read analyzed the difference between fed’s success at masters and majors. He argued that federer tends to win majors more than masters because they go 5 sets. He though that the weight of the moment sinks in so much more in set 5 and the opponent realizes this is federer. If you don’t have the will of a titan it just saps your confidence. I’m really interested in how JDP’s focus comes.

Long time since I’ve seen Roger miss so many forehands wide in a major.

Something to mention I heard the TV announcers talk about was Del Potro’s focus…just coming off playing Nadal in the semi’s and then coming back to play this well against Federer. Very Impressive.

Federer wasn’t at his best, but that was an absolutely incredible effort from del Potro.

Amazing. My heart is pounding watching that. Great match. Great Play.

Roddick is probably wondering why Federer couldn’t serve like this at Wimbeldon!

Federer remarkably composed in his speech, considering what a trainwreck Australia was.

Glad they finally let him speak in Spanish.

Thanks for being here everybody, hope you all stick around The Daily Forehand beyond this US Open—we’re not going anywhere.

What other tournament is coming up

by Camry on Sep 14, 2009 8:39 PM EDT up reply actions

The Davis Cup semifinals are this weekend, and there are WTA events in Quebec and Guangzhou as well.

The Asian swings for both tours are coming, as are masters events in Shanghai and Paris, and the year-end championships.

Congrats, DELPOTRO

I was rooting for Federer all the way, but what a match! 3/4 Majors feature 5 setters, awesome. and BTW the men’s final totally outshined the women’s again. final. Don’t wanna be dramatic, but I think we witnessed a passing of the torch to DelPo.

BTW, I was angry at first that DelPo messed by atp bracket, but no harm. ;) So totally happy for DelPo. There seems to be some “6” consecutive curse.

Congrats, Juan Martin! I’ve started to love this guy!

From Roger, I didn’t think the intensity was there. So many double faults, trying to pull off unnecessary trick shots, not going into rallies in Del Potro’s serve in the fifth set,… None of this is to take away from JMDP who I think can very well be a multi-slam winner.

by leporid on Sep 14, 2009 9:01 PM EDT reply actions

I agree on both counts. I think Federer was listless, but I think del Potro should have a lot of success in New York and Paris, where the ball kicks up into his strike zone.

I am thrilled.

I didn’t get to see ANY of the match, but listened to the last few games on the radio and saw some highlights. Can’t wait to see more of JMDP in the future.
