US Open Day 13 Open Thread

Photo

After a wet, frustrating but restful Friday, the US Open on (not quite Super) Saturday features the same matches Friday would have, but with a slightly shuffled the order.

Here is the order of play for singles matches that might happen in Arthur Ashe Stadium this Saturday:

Day Session: 12:00 PM Start Time

1. Fernando Gonzalez (CHI)[11] v. Rafael Nadal (ESP)[3] (Nadal Leads 7-6(4), 6-6(3-2*)

2. Yanina Wickmayer (BEL) v. Caroline Wozniacki (DEN)[9] (May be moved to Armstrong)

Night Session: Not Before 8:00 PM Start Time

1. Kim Clijsters (BEL) v. Serena Williams (USA)[2]

The men's doubles final is theoretically to be held between Gonzalez-Nadal and Wickmayer-Wozniacki, but it will presumably be moved to Armstrong.

The full order of play for all courts can be found here, and live running scores can be found here.

It could be a huge, awesome day of tennis, or it could be another day of tapes from the 80's.  Either way, feel free to share your most heartfelt (or least heartfelt) feelings on the day's proceedings in this open thread.

The awkward part is Ginzo is in the middle of a TB. If he can pull an upset, we know the strategy against Nadal- 24 hours rest every 2 sets. ;)

by Ben Rothenberg on Sep 12, 2009 9:02 PM EDT up reply actions

Tomorrow hmmm well I think our defense has improved theres really people skeptical on both sides. Some say we have no Receivers and others say our defense only played a third of the season last year.
Since its the Pakers I always think we have a chance just because I don’t like them. But Cutlers first game I kind of expect him to bust out. (and I’m not one of the fans that are in love with the guy either) But analysts have been saying Rodgers is probably going to be better than him so I think he’ll take that as a challenge. Plus people forget about Forte.

Serena got called for a foot fault at 15-30 on a second serve which gave clijsters match point. Serena flipped out, started screaming at line judge, which should get you a penalty. Serena had already gotten a warning for smashing a racquet, so she lost a point rather than a warning. And since that point was match point, it gave Clijsters the match.

Brian Early = Tool

When they were talking at the net before the default he tried to tell the chair umpire Serena apologized so it’s ok. But thye didn’t go for that.

thanks

Is it clear whether the initial foot fault call was accurate or not? From a technical standpoint, I understand the argument of “let them finish the damn match”

And Wozniacki wins

One Belgian is enough. And at least one seeded player got through.

Also, cheese.

Whoah. On seeing the replay she TOTALLY lost it. Whoah. Line crossed (sorry)

I just don’t know for me I use to always be yelling at someone or getting yelled at or having arguments. So maybe I can’t judge but to me sometimes people have good reason to go off to me. And what I look at pretty much is the foot fault call which is what I don’t like who calls that at this stage???
The yelling I don’t know what she said blah blah probably because I would of done the samething so I can’t say anything about it. But man with all this rain and delays this tournament started out pretty well. (even with some of the upsets on the mens side Oudin was carrying it)

I don’t think she should have been punished like that, I was just making a bad pun. I said I defended her.

by Jsz on Sep 12, 2009 11:31 PM EDT up reply actions

I don't know.

There are rules. She had a code violation already.

Even thought at best it looked like a questionable (and possibly bad) call on the foot fault, it was all about the timing. Serena knew that gave Clijsters match point(s) and instead of distracting herself with an argument should have just been able to pull herself together and play the match. She obviously cursed at the linesperson and deserved the point violation, in my opinion.

Every player is going to have calls that go for them and that go against them. The best players are the ones that can overcome that.

I don’t argue that. I’m just saying when people say “you need control” or anger management after something like this I think its condescending in some situations. Thats why I’m only no happy about the foot fault.

Serena seems to be in pretty good spirits in her press conference. Maybe more in shock than anything, or maybe because she’s pretty friendly with Clijsters, but she’s not being too negative at all.

Yes, but it is ridiculous to state that

this was “a match she was going to lose anyway” when she was at 15-30 at 5-6 in the second set.

Yeah, with Serena digging out of the last service game 30-30 is very winnable

It doesn’t, really, but there’s a new home page that has a lot of breaking sports stuff. It’s pretty cool. http://www.sbnation.com

And I plug because I’m doing a bunch of writing on it.
