US Open Day 12 Open Thread

via a.espncdn.com

On this twelfth day of the US Open main draw, four will become two on the women's side, while five will finally become four for the men.  That is, of course, assuming the rain ever lets up.

Here are the matches scheduled for play today on Arthur Ashe, the latter two of which could be potentially moved off Ashe to another court.

Day Session: 2:00 PM Start Time

1. Kim Clijsters (BEL) v. Serena Williams (USA)[2]

2. Fernando Gonzalez (CHI)[11] v. Rafael Nadal (ESP)[3] (Nadal Leads 7-6(4), 6-6(3-2*)

3. Yanina Wickmayer (BEL) v. Caroline Wozniacki (DEN)[9]

Way off the beaten track, the women's doubles semifinal between Black/Huber and Stosur/Stubbs is slated to play on Court 11, which is a ridiculously small venue for such a big match. I understand they don't want to open up Armstrong and then have to clean it, but not even Grandstand?

The full order of play for all courts can be found here, and live running scores can be found here.  If the scores aren't moving, you can bet it's still raining.

Not a whole lot lot of tennis left to be played, folks, so savor every morsel.  And keep the comments coming.

UPDATE: Women's matches cancelled for today, Nadal-Gonzalez still possible.

UPDATE 2: Nadal-Gonzalez postponed until Saturday as well, making Friday a total washout.

Court Assignment Changes

Gonzalez-Nadal moved to Armstrong, Wozniacki-Wickmayer moved to Grandstand. All three will begin simultaneously once weather clears up.

Just keeps getting pushed back more and more. Some weather forecasts make it seem like play today is going to be pretty much impossible.

Not before 4:30. Wonder how long until “Not before Saturday” will be the word…

Hello, I am a newbie to tennis. I just started watching this week because I have been sick with the flu. I’ve become mildly obsessed with it because it is a great sport to watch while sick and out of it (fast paced, entertaining, doesn’t require a lot of thought). Since I am a big sports fan, I know a little bit about tennis (I know the big names and I know who wins the majors). Would somebody care to give me a rundown on what else I should know?

Awesome, glad you have found this awesome sport of ours.

As far as what else you “should” know, is there any area in particular you’re curious about? There’s a lot of stuff out there in the tennis world.

I’ve been reading the live blog on ESPN.com, waiting for updates about the rain, and they were talking about how Djokovic hasn’t lived up to expectations, and that he is somewhat of a disappointment. Why is that?

Djokovic was a guy who had a lot of hype when he first broke into the pros, hype he largely lived up to on his way to winning the 2008 Australian Open and becoming a fixture at #3 in the world.

But since that grand slam title for him, his results have slipped and so has his ranking. This is his first time in the semifinals of a major all year, losing earlier than expected in the previous three. It’s been a fairly disappointing year for someone with his recent success in the past few years.

Hope that helps…any other questions you have during this delightful rain delay?

Welcome.

Me and BR are the knowledgeable ones. ;)

I’m not exactly sure how extensive your knowledge is, but something important is the so called “Big Four” which consists of Federer, Nadal, Djokovic, and Murray. If one of them does win its usually an upset. They usually decide the majors. Something like the last 16 of the last 17 majors have been won by Fed or Nadal and one by Djokovic.

5 pm now

Who has the advantage in a night match, Kimmy C or Serena?

by planII2002 on Sep 11, 2009 4:17 PM EDT reply actions

I think the advantage stays with Serena, though if there are any nerves involved it might help Clijsters. Serena should be the one feeling all the pressure in this match, and Clijsters has nothing to lose.

Women’s matches cancelled for today, they’ll still try to get in Nadal-Gonzalez.

And it’s a total washout, no play today. On the twelfth day we rested.
