Day Session: 11:00 AM Start Time

2. Dinara Safina (RUS)[1] v. Olivia Rogowska (AUS)

3. Novak Djokovic (SRB)[4] v. Ivan Ljubicic (CRO)

Night Session: Not Before 7:00 PM Start Time

1. Tszvetana Pironkova (BUL) v. Maria Sharapova (USA)[29]

2. Ernests Gulbis (LAT) v. Andy Murray (GBR)[2]

This question is for anyone doing the usopen.org bracket challenge...

Why have they only counted Roger Federer and Andy Roddick wins. It gives me 2 points after all of yesterdays matches?
Any help??

I actually didn’t wind up entering that one, sorry, so I’m not much help, but I have heard that there have been a lot of technical difficulties…

Meanwhile, how bout TDF interviewee Olivia Rogowska up a break 3-2 on Dinara Safina?

She won our 50k back in May. She’s a really nice girl and it’s great that she’s breaking through.

by El Soro on Sep 1, 2009 1:19 PM EDT up reply actions

Absolutely. And she’s declined a bunch of WCs (a questionable move in my mind), so she’s really working for every break she’s getting

One of the best things about women’s tennis? Watching a classic Safin(a) world-class, epic meltdown.

Absolutely. Here’s hoping Rogowska can stay in it.

Rogowska would be greatly aided by getting a first serve in just once.

Rogowska keeps giving Safina rope to hang herself with, 3-3 in the TB.

Doubled up for the set…wow…

Cue the meltdown in 3,2,1…

Double fault to end it!

Hell of a set from Rogowska, wins the tiebreak 7-5 after saving four set points.

Do you think it’s even possible that Dinara can marshal the composure to come through this?

by El Soro on Sep 1, 2009 1:49 PM EDT up reply actions

I think so, if she gets an early lead in the second she might be able to roll.

Nice first-round win for Melanie...

…now it looks like we’ll see how she does against Dementieva

by El Soro on Sep 1, 2009 2:01 PM EDT reply actions

Tough draw. I give her no shot vs. Dementieva, but R2 is a nice showing.

Only if Safina competes against her, instead of her and herself

Four double faults for Safina in her first service game of the third. I wish I could say it was unbelievable, but Safina rarely fails to up the horrendousness.

Crowd is totally on her side to boot.

Some nice winners by Rogowska there, but this is mostly some real ugly stuff.

Dinara is lucky that she didn’t face a more experienced opponent, otherwise she would be packing her bags right now, with the way she played.

by El Soro on Sep 1, 2009 3:16 PM EDT reply actions

Absolutely. But it’s still agreat effort from Rogowska, who appears to be taking the loss in stride pretty nicely judging by her post-match demeanor.

Both real fun players to watch, but I’m guessing Gonzalez will take it in straights.

I’m watching what looks like the end of Berdych-Odesnik.

Yeh, Gonzalez is the much better hardcourt player. Plus I don’t like that little skunk tail hanging out the back of Massu’s hat.

Berdych looking pretty good in beating Odesnik, as he most always does. It’s only the mental lapses that are keeping him out of the top 5.

McHale's Navy!

How about another young American girl winning her first round match? Christina McHale of New Jersey, just 17yrs old. Probably will play Sharapova next.

She lost a heartbreaker in Australia this year, nice to see her get a grand slam win under her belt.

And with how streaky Sharapova has been, maybe she’ll be able to make some noise in that match as well.

Sharapova looks a little better than she has so far this summer. Of course the wheel should come off at any point, but Pironkova is a dangerous player she’s handling well.
