Open Thread: Washington QF -- #1 Andy Roddick vs. #11 Ivo Karlovic

I'm at the first quarterfinal of the night session on Friday at the Legg Mason Tennis Classic, the ATP tour's 500 level tournament in Washington, DC.

This match is on ESPN2 (and various internet livestreams), so since some of you are probably watching, I thought I'd try to do an open thread for the first time on here.  Leave any running thoughts or comments below...

Roddick Is Really Playing Awful

Broken at 1-2, Karlovic up a break at 1-4 now.

Not getting enough free points on his serve at all.

Chance here for Roddick at 2-4, 15-40 as Karlovic sprays some forehands…

And he converts the second break point, back on serve at 4-3.

Karlovic dumps an easy backhand volley into the net to give Roddick a second minbreak, 6-3 lead and two set points on his racquet.

Karlovic saves the first with a nice inside out forehand return on a second serve.

But on the second dumps a backhand slice into the bottom of the net.

Roddick leads 7-6(4)

Roddick just got broken to open the set, sent a ball out of the stadium in anger.

Roddick breaks back for 2-2.

This is some really low quality stuff out there. And to think it’s a sell out crowd of 7,500 that came to see this mess.

I looked up the stats on the matchups between these 2. In the 5 previous matches they’ve played, there have been a total of 3 breaks of serve. Today there have been 4 already (and I bet they’re not done). Um….great returning, guys?!?!

That is pretty incredible. And all three were by Roddick!

And Ivo already has two tonight.

Wow, Andy and Ivo are actually jawing at each other. Or rather, one is jawing at the other one. I don’t think it’s too hard to guess which one is which…

I saw some of that...

But couldn’t hear it. Catch any of what was said?

Andy said something like “I wish you wouldn’t take so much time when you challenge.” And Ivo said something like “Er…okay, fine” and shrugged.

LOL, some of the lamer trash talk I’ve come across.

Roddick minibreaks for 4-3, could be all he needs.

And that's all she wrote

Roddick takes the breaker 7-5, the match 7-6(4), 7-6(5).

That’s eight sets in a row now where Roddick and Karlovic have played a breaker.

Mercifully, it ends!

Mercy indeed.

Hopefully Isner-Berdych is a little prettier. But I’m not holding my breath.
