Saturday Open Thread: ATP Montreal and WTA Cincinnati Semis

Two good looking match ups (Roddick vs. del Potro & Dementieva vs. Jankovic) on the card at the big ATP and WTA events Saturday, as well as two that should be fairly lopsided (Murray vs. Tsonga & Safina vs. Pennetta).

Any and all thoughts on the day's action as it rolls along can go right here in the comments.

Safina just slaughtered Pennetta

Gee, it’s hard to rip on her after her last two wins – Tomorrows final, no matter who she faces, will be a good opportunity for her to play well under pressure.

She’ll have to do it against one of the Williams sisters to get a title in N.Y. however.

I think all of the criticism she’s received for not getting a slam is bogus. Clijsters and Mauresmo were both at No. 1 before they got their slam and they obviously got it done.

A Murray vs del Potro final for me as I have predicted from the start : ). Did nadal fall appart in the second set? I missed the match : (

The effort was still good from Nadal the whole way, but he ran out of answers. Del Potro was hitting lines shot after shot, and hitting them hard. Nothing Nadal, whose game isn’t about keeping points short, could really do.

Montreal always seems to be a bit more about the up and comers, so this is an appropriate group moving forward (save Roddick, I suppose, but he’s having a bit of a resurgence). I’m pulling for Tsonga/Del Potro… I’m a bit of a Tsonga fan I must say and I’m hoping now that we’re back on hard courts we’ll see a bit more of an open field for the champions at these master series events… and possibly a major as well.

If Tsonga was on form to beat Federer he will need to play brilliantly against Murray. His serve, volleys and groundstrokes will have to be near perfect. Murray made light work of Davydenko. I do agree it is nice for an open field.

I’m looking forward to the Roddick v del Potro rematch. Hope del Potro can do it again.

Roddick looks very sharp early

Not giving del Potro any time on return.

But del Potro’s serve is a whole ’nother story.

almost let it get away from him

until those final 2 service games from del potro I thought Roddick would have to win this match with tiebreaks.

by ryzim22 on Aug 15, 2009 7:46 PM EDT up reply actions

Double break, 3-0

Roddick is having trouble keeping the ball in the court. And I don’t mean inside the lines, he can hardly keep it on the green part.

That backhand was past Roddick before del Potro even finished his follow through.

ATP Rankings

1. Federer
2. Murray
3. Nadal

Going to take some time to get used to that. Could Fed and Nadal be on the same side of the draw at the US Open?

Could very well be

But is Nadal really a threat to make the semifinals with his current play?

Del Potro, Roddick possibly Verdasco or Tsonga could meet him before the SFs and take him out if what I’ve heard about Nadal is correct.

by Gavbo on Aug 16, 2009 7:50 AM EDT via mobile up reply actions

I'd add to that list

Davydenko, Hewitt, Gonzalez, Berdych…

Nadal seems real vulnerable to me right now.

U say Hewitt could take him out but Ferrero beat Hewitt and he’s not ready for the big scalps? Haha

by Gavbo on Aug 16, 2009 8:10 AM EDT via mobile up reply actions

And yeah I’m predicting gonzo to put rafa out of cincy, his fh will be too much if nadal is unfit.
