Dinara Safina is in the fourth round of the Australian Open, something I didn't honestly expect. I also didn't expect to see her looking so horrifyingly huge. My God.

Normally a #1 player winning in straight sets in her first match of a tournament is not noteworthy at all, but this is no ordinary #1. #1 Dinara Safina beat Roberta Vinci 6-4, 6-4 in the first round of the China Open on Sunday in Beijing, her first straight sets win in seven matches, ending what had been a record drought for a #1 player. Safina didn't play particularly well, broken in four of her ten service games and serving eight double faults, but she managed to win in straight sets against #59 Vinci, the highest ranked opponent she has beaten in her last four tournaments. Her next match against Shuai Zhang should be pretty easy, so there's a chance for her to get some momentum and confidence back in China if she takes advantage of her opportunities.

According to BetUS.com, unseeded Kim Clijsters is the betting odds on favorite for her fourth round match Sunday against #3 Venus Williams. Crazy?

Not often a player earns three more breaks than her opponent and still loses the match, but that's exactly what happened to #7 Vera Zvonareva in the third round of Cincinnati vs. Daniela Hantuchova. Zvonareva won 18 games to Hantuchova's 14, yet walked away the loser. The match took an incredible 2 hours and 50 minutes, yet included a 6-0 set, which perhaps is as much a testament to Hantuchova's ability to slow down matches as anything. God only knows how much longer this match could have been if every set had been competitive. One last head scratching stat from this match: Zvonareva won eighteen games in the match, which is two more games than Hantuchova had won in the pair's previous four matches combined. Hantuchova's last six wins have all been three-setters, all but one of which took over two-and-a-half hours. The WTA, there's nothing quite like it...
