Stewart Cink was nice enough to loan his Claret Jug to the Bad Gastein tournament organizers, who in turn gave it to champion Andrea Petkovic. She certainly looks grateful.
Petkovic won her first career title by defeating Ioana Raduca Olaru, a victory that proves once and for all that there's more to tennis than just having a lot of vowels in your name.
The 21-year old Serbian-born German is a nice story few in tennis circles are familiar with. Some may remember her as the player who didn't even last through the first game of her 2008 Australian Open match vs. Anna Chakvetadze.
But even before that injury she had set an expiration date on her tennis career, giving herself two years to make it into the top 100. If she didn't crack the top 100 in that allotted time, she was to quit the game and go to college instead.
This title is another step toward ensuring that Andrea will continue playing and will stay away from higher education for some time. A victory for jocks everywhere.
