On Halloween, Sony Ericsson sponsored a Maria Sharapova look-alike contest. It was revolutionary in that absolutely none of the contestants looked even vaguely like Sharapova.

I mean, come on. One of them has red hair.

Sharapova got to pick the winner, and amusingly picked one half her height, just to make life tougher for the photographers.

Also, kind of disgusting. These players must feel so objectified/commercialized during these photoshoots.

The best point of the 2009 Rogers Cup final between Maria Sharapova and Elena Dementieva. Could actually be the point of the year.

In the second set of her quarterfinal in Los Angeles vs. Urszula Radwanska, Maria Sharapova was broken four times and hit an unbelievable eleven double faults. In one set. She hit twenty second serves, and eleven of them didn't go in the box. Yes, second serves. Not just that she was losing points on her second serve--she didn't even get half of her second serves in play. Unbelievable. Even more unbelievably, she won the set. Sharapova moved on to the semifinals with a straight sets victory, to the tune of 6-4, 7-5. Urszula Radwanska should truly be ashamed. I hope you were luckier than I was and managed to miss seeing this match. But even if you didn't see it, I'm guessing you could smell this stinker.

Don't call it a comeback--because she's out. Maria Sharapova got blasted off the court by second-seeded world #3 Venus Williams, by the score of 6-2, 6-2. Sharapova didn't get much help from her second serve, winning only 25% of the points on it and throwing in eight double faults. Time for more questions about her shoulder. This was only Sharapova's second loss in a US Open Series event since 2005. It broke a ten-match win streak in the events. This, not coincidentally, is also the first time Sharapova has met a Williams sister in a US Open series event. Venus Williams, on the other hand, made her first semifinal in Stanford since 2005. Williams has made the finals of Stanford six times, but has won the title only twice. She'll have her hands full with another Russian blonde, WTA #4 Elena Dementieva, in the semifinals. Dementieva crushed Daniela Hantuchova 6-2, 6-4, in a match that wasn't nearly as competitive as the score would let on.
